The Meaning of Om
In Hinduism, the Sanskrit syllable Om, also spelled “Aum”, is a very sacred sound. It is said that the universe was created when Brahma, the creator, took a deep breath and bellowed the word Om, which rang throughout all of space and vibrated our physical universe into existence.
Here is a short list of some of the ways that Om is used:
- It is used at the beginning and end of most Hindi pujas, or prayers ceremonies.
- It is considered the most powerful mantra and affirmation because of its simplicity and low audible frequency.
- It is used in yoga and meditation classes because of its power to focus your attention on the sound. It also has a calming effect on the mind and body.
